New jersey has more lawyers than japan; ranks top 5 for legal corruption
At the New Jersey Lawyers Association, we are committed to ensuring that every resident has access to fair and transparent legal services. Our mission is to expose unethical practices while celebrating those who uphold the law with integrity. We strive to empower individuals by advocating for accountability among legal professionals and promoting equitable access to justice for all. New Jersey’s Legal System: Too Many Lawyers, Not Enough Accountability
New Jersey is home to approximately 39,300 active lawyers — nearly as many as the entire country of Japan (roughly 43,000–47,000 bengoshi).
With one of the highest lawyer-to-population ratios in the United States (about 4.23 lawyers per 1,000 residents), New Jersey has more legal professionals per capita than most states. Yet this abundance has not translated into better justice or stronger public trust.
A History of Corruption and Self-Regulation Failures
New Jersey has a well-documented reputation for elevated public corruption, political scandals, and issues within the legal and judicial systems. From high-profile federal convictions to ongoing concerns about influence peddling and ethics violations, the state frequently ranks among the worst in national corruption studies.
The legal profession’s claim that it can effectively police itself has repeatedly fallen short — here in New Jersey and nationally. When lawyers, judges, and court insiders face serious allegations of misconduct, clients and the public too often feel powerless.
That’s Why We Exist
The New Jersey Lawyers Association is not a law firm and we are not lawyers. We are an independent consumer rights advocacy organization fighting for everyday New Jersey residents when the legal system fails them.
We provide guidance, resources, and advocacy for those harmed by attorney misconduct, judicial issues, or systemic problems in the courts. Because when there are nearly as many lawyers in New Jersey as in all of Japan — yet accountability remains elusive — consumers need a strong, independent voice on their side.
